Unfortunately, many still hold onto an outdated, industrial-age mindset toward education, even though we now live in a technological age. The traditional belief is simple: go to school, get good grades, secure a good job. Yet this path has become increasingly dysfunctional in today’s reality.Parents sacrifice their life savings to send their children to universities, hoping it will guarantee them a secure future. But what happens after graduation? Today, when a company advertises five job openings, over a thousand “qualified” applicants often rush to apply. Many graduates spend years—sometimes over a decade—searching for elusive jobs. Others settle for jobs with miserable conditions, earning as little as N20,000 a month, despite their years of education and effort.Consider the Vanguard report of April 16, 2024, titled: “Poor remuneration: Pitiable condition of private schools teachers.” Imagine enduring four to five years in the university only to live under such conditions, or the emotional strain of depending on others for your financial needs after graduation.Today’s world demands a different mindset and a different approach to education. University education, in itself, is not bad. But we must ask: should it be the first option for our children immediately after secondary school? Is it wise for them to undergo years of academic stress, only to become dependent adults with no clear economic path?The good news is that there is a better alternative—entrepreneurship education and skills acquisition.The world has moved from the industrial age into the technological age. The pre-COVID world is not the same as the post-COVID world. With the rise of artificial intelligence, robotics, animatics, and 3D printing, many jobs that existed yesterday have disappeared, and new opportunities have emerged.We need education that prepares us to solve today’s problems and equips us to tackle tomorrow’s challenges. We need education that fosters innovation, creativity, and adaptability—skills that empower us to create value, not just seek jobs.It’s time to redefine education to meet today’s realities, ensuring that our children are not just graduates but capable, independent individuals ready to thrive in the evolving world.
